Deep in the Mojave Desert, Maria Paula Acuña and her followers gather on the thirteenth of each month at a site near California City. Acuña says the Virgin Mary first appeared to her there in 1989. They come to pray, receive blessings, and watch the desert sky for signs of the Virgin’s presence.
